Adventure Awaits at Overnight Summer Camps for Metro Detroit Kids

Instead of spending the summer perfecting the art of being a couch potato, overnight summer camps in Michigan give kids the opportunity to try out new activities — think archery, kayaking, rock-climbing, hiking and more.

Plus, there’s the opportunity to make new friends from across the state while enjoying all the fun that the outdoors can offer. The skills and memories campers will gain often stick with them for years to come, too — among the many other benefits of camp.

Check out this new indoor action park coming to Troy

Families in Metro Detroit have a new place to play: Slick City Troy, a one‑of‑a‑kind indoor slide park where kids can race, climb and bounce while parents relax nearby. With giant dry slides, trampoline‑style air courts and a toddler zone designed for safe exploration, this playground is built for all ages.

Slick City Troy

  • Location: 1820 Crooks Road, Troy
  • Phone: (248) 816-8496

Slick City creates a space where movement feels like an amusement park ride. The facility is the world’s first “waterless water park,” using special technology to make slides fast and frictionless without a drop of water. This innovative design helps children develop motor skills and confidence while they play. It is built to handle energetic kids, teens and even adults who want to join the action.

What kids can do here

Slides

Kids ages 4 and up (and adventurous adults) can race, twist and glide down Slick City’s signature dry slides. From steep drops and racing lanes to curving and wave-style slides, there’s a wide mix of thrills that lets kids challenge themselves at their own pace. Mats are provided for safe, comfortable rides, and the variety keeps repeat visits exciting.

Air Courts, swings & extras

Between slides, kids can jump into action on the air courts, where classic games like basketball and dodgeball get a bouncy upgrade. The Swing & Trapeze attraction lets kids soar through the air and land on a giant airbag, building confidence while having fun. An arcade, zip rail and rotating obstacle-style attractions add even more to explore.

Toddler play areas

Younger children have spaces designed just for them. The Junior Jungle and Web Crawler are reserved for kids 5 and under and feature soft play elements, mini slides and climbing structures. These areas are separate from the main attractions, giving toddlers and preschoolers a safe place to play comfortably.

Programs & special events

Slick City Troy also hosts special programs throughout the year, including Little Sliders Club for younger kids, sensory-friendly play sessions, family discount days, homeschool socials, glow-in-the-dark After Hours events and adults-only nights. Event schedules vary, so families should check the park’s calendar before visiting.

What groups can do here

Slick City Action Park is a popular spot for group outings. Groups of 15 or more can enjoy full access to dry slides, air courts and other attractions, with spacious event areas available for gatherings.

The park offers flexible group packages that can include food and drinks, and an experienced event team helps handle the details from start to finish. Slick City hosts a wide range of group events, including school field trips, youth and sports teams, family celebrations, corporate outings, college groups and community organizations.

What to know before you go

Admission and policies

Slick City Troy encourages families to book tickets online in advance, especially on weekends. Online ticket sales are final, but tickets can be moved to a different date or time if requested before the start time and if space is available. Walk-up tickets are also available at the park, though availability may be limited during busy times.

Action Tickets are for ages 4 and up, while the soft play areas are reserved for younger children. Spectators do not need to purchase a ticket to enter, but everyone entering the park must have a signed waiver on file. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

CitySocks are required for all participants and cost $3.99 per pair. Socks from other entertainment centers are not allowed, but CitySocks can be reused on future visits if they are in good condition. Outside food and drinks are not permitted, though food and beverages are available for purchase inside the park.

Tips for visiting

  • Book tickets online to secure your preferred date and time and reduce wait times.
  • Complete waivers in advance to make entry faster and easier.
  • Dress kids in comfortable clothes and pull back long hair before playing.
  • Start younger kids in the junior play areas before moving to larger attractions.
  • Leave outside food and drinks at home and plan to purchase snacks on-site if needed.

Why it’s a great fit

Slick City Troy solves two major headaches for parents: dealing with wet swimsuits and trying to keep kids of different ages entertained. By bringing water park-style thrills indoors without the water, it delivers high-adrenaline fun without the need for changing rooms, towels or shivering drives home during a Michigan winter.

It also works surprisingly well for families with kids of varying ages. While your 5-year-old navigates the Junior Jungle, your teenager can actually enjoy themselves launching off the Mega Launch or practicing parkour on the Air Court. Add in the convenience of being inside Oakland Mall, meaning easy parking and the ability to run errands before or after, and you have a low-stress, high-reward outing that fits into a busy family schedule.

5 things Detroit families should know before visiting Belle Isle Aquarium

Parents looking for a low-cost outing in Detroit will find the Belle Isle Aquarium easy to visit with kids as long as they plan around limited hours, short visit times and park entry rules.

Opened in 1904 and designed by renowned Detroit architect Albert Kahn, the aquarium is considered the oldest public aquarium in the United States. After closing in 2005, it reopened in 2012 following a community-led restoration supported by volunteers and the Belle Isle Conservancy

5 things to know before you go

1. Hours are limited and worth checking ahead

The Belle Isle Aquarium is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed Monday through Wednesday.

Important closure dates: The aquarium will also be closed on Feb. 5-6.

Because it is not open daily, families may want to confirm hours before visiting, especially around holidays or school breaks. Many parents find that arriving earlier in the day works best, particularly when planning around naps or other activities.

Most visits last about 30 to 60 minutes, which makes the aquarium an easy stop to pair with other plans on the island.

2. Admission is free but the park is not

There is no admission fee to enter the aquarium. A $5 donation is encouraged but not required and helps support daily operations and animal care.

That donation-based model comes up often in visitor feedback. In a Google review posted in early 2026, one visitor wrote, For being something run via donations, it’s an amazing place.

While the aquarium itself is free, Belle Isle Park is managed as a Michigan state park. Most vehicles entering the island need a Michigan Recreation Passport. Michigan residents can purchase an annual pass for about $14, while non-residents can buy a daily pass for about $11 at the entrance or online.

Families arriving on foot, by bike or by public transit do not need a recreation passport.

3. You do not need tickets or reservations

The aquarium does not require advance tickets or timed entry. Visitors can walk in during open hours without booking ahead.

That flexibility is helpful for families with changing schedules. Because entry is free, weekends can feel busier, so arriving closer to opening time often makes the experience calmer and less crowded.

4. The space is compact and easy to explore

The aquarium is laid out as a single long gallery with tanks lining both sides. This simple design makes it easy for families to move through at their own pace without worrying about missing exhibits or navigating multiple rooms.

That experience is reflected in visitor reviews. One Google reviewer described it this way: “It’s an incredible aquarium, small and quaint. The atmosphere is awesome.”

Lighting inside the aquarium is intentionally dim to support the fish habitats, creating a quiet, museum-like atmosphere. Many families appreciate the slower pace, especially with children who enjoy lingering at the tanks.

There is no food service inside the aquarium, so parents may want to plan snacks or meals before or after their visit.

5. Set expectations for time and age range

The Belle Isle Aquarium is best suited for families who are comfortable with a short, self-guided visit. School-age children and curious preschoolers tend to get the most out of the experience, particularly those interested in animals, science or local history.

Younger toddlers may enjoy the colors and movement of the fish but often move through more quickly. Knowing that ahead of time can help parents plan a visit that feels relaxed rather than rushed.

Make a day of it

After leaving Belle Isle, several family-friendly restaurants nearby offer warm, indoor seating.

Planning meals off the island helps families keep a winter aquarium visit simple and comfortable without adding extra stops or time outside.

Curious Detroit Parents: How do I register my child for kindergarten in metro Detroit?

Registering your child for kindergarten can be a difficult transition that comes with a lot of questions. Keeping track of age cutoffs, school options, paperwork and deadlines can feel overwhelming, whether it’s your first time doing it or not.

This guide breaks down exactly what you need to know about kindergarten registration in Detroit, so that you can feel confident in getting your kids, and you, ready for this important milestone.

Welcome to Curious Detroit Parents, your guide to what parents need to know about raising kids in the Motor City. From schools and neighborhoods to local events and fun facts, we break down the stories, policies and places shaping family life across metro Detroit. Curious about something? Send your questions, comments or thoughts on what we should cover next to david@metroparent.com.

Is my child ready for kindergarten?

In Michigan, your child must turn 5 years old by Sept. 1 of the school year to be eligible to register for kindergarten.

Aside from age cutoffs, readiness for kindergarten is an individual process. It’s important to assess if your child is developmentally, socially and emotionally ready for this transition:

  • Is your child prepared to share, take turns and follow directions?
  • Can your child sit still for 15-20 minutes?
  • Does your child know their first and last name?
  • Is your child able to express needs, feelings and other ideas?

To help your child get ready you can start early:

  • Teach essential skills and information such as recognizing colors, shapes and elementary numbers.
  • Playing educational games to help build vocabulary and an understanding of basic concepts.
  • Start practicing classroom routines and etiquette such as sitting in one spot, listening to a story or following simple directions.
  • Talk positively about school to your child. Encourage them, and get them excited about this opportunity to learn.
  • Take a tour of their school ahead of time so your child can become familiar with their new environment.

Parents can also refer to additional advice and resources from the Detroit Public Schools Community District to help them prepare.

Am I ready for my child to start kindergarten?

The start of school is a big change for parents, too, not just for kids. However, Detroit families have plenty of support to help them navigate any challenges that come with this new chapter. There are local support groups for parents in Detroit, offering resources, advice and a community forum. Some useful groups include:

How to register

Registration for Detroit’s public schools is managed by the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Here is a general overview of the process:

  • Check eligibility: Your child must turn 5 years old by Sept. 1 of the school year to be eligible to register for kindergarten.
  • Gather required documents: Proof of residency, birth certificate and immunization records are most commonly required. Visit your district and school websites to verify exactly what documents are needed.
  • Complete registration: Visit Detroit Public Schools Community District for all of the details on how to register. You can complete the process online and submit documentation digitally.
  • Prepare for the first day: Some schools may host orientation events or in-person registration days. Keep an eye on your school’s calendar and website for updates and important dates.

Supplies, support and next steps

For peace of mind, one of the best ways to help your child feel prepared for kindergarten is to send them to school with the right supplies and routines in place.

Kindergarten-friendly essentials include:

  • A secure school bag that can hold a full-size folder and lunchbox.
  • A leak-proof water bottle or cup.
  • Easy-open lunch or snack containers.
  • Clothes and shoes a child can manage independently including velcro shoes, stretchy wristbands and easy layers.

In the weeks leading up to the first day of school, families can also ease the transition by setting earlier bedtimes, practicing morning routines and keeping conversations about school positive and encouraging.

Where does Michigan rank for raising a family in 2026?

In WalletHub’s 2026 Best and Worst States to Raise a Family report, Michigan ranked 35th out of 50 states, landing slightly below the national average.

While the ranking reflects statewide data, it does not tell the full story for families living in metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan, where many communities continue to offer strong schools, affordable housing and stable neighborhoods that are highly appealing to parents raising children.

WalletHub evaluated all 50 states using 50 key indicators of family-friendliness, including housing affordability, child-care costs, health care quality, crime rates, school performance and median family income. With the cost of raising a child now topping $320,000 through age 18, where families choose to live matters more than ever.

That is where Michigan, particularly the Detroit metro area, quietly stands out. Offering families a more attainable version of the American Dream than many higher-ranked states.

Why Michigan families still come out ahead

One of Michigan’s strongest advantages in WalletHub’s 2026 study is affordability, where the state ranked 15th nationally. That ranking is especially meaningful in metro Detroit, where families can buy larger homes, access highly rated public school districts and still stay within a reasonable budget.

Communities across Oakland, Macomb and western Wayne counties consistently attract families thanks to strong schools, safe neighborhoods and easy access to jobs in healthcare, automotive, technology and education. Compared with coastal states and fast-growing Sun Belt cities, Michigan offers families more space, shorter commutes and greater financial breathing room.

For parents juggling mortgage payments, child care, extracurriculars and savings, that balance makes a huge difference.

A family lifestyle that goes beyond numbers

Beyond cost and rankings, Michigan offers families something harder to measure: a deeply rooted community culture and natural beauty. With the Great Lakes, inland lakes, parks, and four-season outdoor recreation, kids grow up with access to beaches, hiking, boating, and winter sports that many states simply cannot match.

Detroit’s surrounding suburbs and towns also provide a strong sense of community, from local school events and sports leagues to libraries, museums, and family festivals. These everyday experiences help create the kind of stable, enriching environment that supports child development just as much as schools and income levels.

How Michigan compares nationally

Here is where Michigan placed across WalletHub’s key categories:

  • Overall rank: 35th
  • Affordability: 15th
  • Family fun: 38th
  • Health and safety: 28th
  • Education and child care: 37th
  • Socio-economics: 33rd

While Michigan may not rank at the very top in every category, its strong affordability score combined with solid safety and housing value keeps it competitive, especially for families who want long-term stability rather than short-term flash.
