Kid-friendly dining: 5 new restaurants to try out in metro Detroit

A new year is the perfect excuse to shake up the dinner routine—especially when Detroit’s food scene keeps delivering fresh spots that welcome the whole family. From pizza and bagels to burgers and global flavors, these kid-friendly restaurants opened around Detroit in the past year and are already earning a spot on parents’ must-try lists.

Here are five kid-friendly dining options to try out:

The Rectory

  • Location: 1920 Atkinson St.

Since its grand opening in September of 2025, The Rectory has been serving up hand-tossed pizzas made with locally-sourced ingredients. The pizzeria is nestled inside what used to be the rectory of an old historic church—which now houses The Congregation coffee shop. Sit inside The Rectory’s small interior dining room or out on its enclosed deck, outfitted with ample heaters for colder months. You can always get your pizza to-go from the outdoor order window. It’s the perfect place for a casual family meal.

Little Ghost

  • 22305 Woodward Ave.

This new burger joint in Ferndale is the loud, fun sibling of the Grey Ghost. Look for the iconic magenta-colored brick building. The menu is small but flavor packed, with their signature item being the Ghost Burger—a ⅓ lb beef patty with iceberg lettuce, american cheese and ghost sauce. They’ve got great kids menu options to try as well, like the kid’s cheeseburger, kid’s tenders and kid’s all beef hot dog.

Bev’s Bagels

  • 4884 Grand River Ave.

The “bagel diner” opened its doors in May of 2025, with plans to expand to Ann Arbor in the coming year. Besides just having heckin’ good traditional and sourdough bagels, you can also order bagel pizzas (pizza bialy) and warm breakfast sandwiches. The interior is small, with only about 10 barstools, so expect to take your food to-go during peak times. If it’s not too cold, Core City Park is right across the street and offers green space and ample seating. Beacon Park is also close by.

Moma G’s

  • 474 Peterboro St.

Moma G’s is a new family restaurant that opened in October of 2025 on Detroit’s West Side that serves up affordable comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s something for everyone. Coming for breakfast? Order up a stack of pancakes or an egg sandwich. For dinner, there’s chicken nuggets, cheeseburgers and hot dogs. All the things kids love. And, don’t miss out on Moma G’s VIRAL Smash Burger, which is 2 beef patties, pickles, American cheese, grilled onions and Moma G’s sauce.

Mr. Miguel’s

  • 17330 Hall Rd Suite 195

The Mexican kitchen and cantina opened its fifth location in metro Detroit in July of 2025 in Partridge Creek Mall. Order up some fresh guac for the table alongside street-style tacos, rice bowls, fajitas and Mexican desserts like churros and sopapillas. Lil’ Amigos also have their own menu, with kid-friendly options like an Americano Taco, Enchilada, Grilled Chicken Bites, Tostada, Mini Burrito, Mini Chimi or Quesadilla.

Soon to open!

Waka by Baobab Fare

Very soon, the beloved East-African food truck will open a fast-casual location in Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market. The restaurant will continue to serve up favorites like their chapati sandwiches and samosas, while introducing new inspired dishes yet to be announced. For now, you can still visit the Waka food truck or sit down at their award-winning restaurant, Baobab Fare. The restaurant, located on Woodward Avenue, has a kids meal for little ones to try out East-African food, which is a bowl with a choice of protein and two sides.
