Lunar New Year Events for Metro Detroit Families

Happy New Year … again! About a month after the standard American New Year fun kicks off Jan. 1, the Lunar New Year celebrations in metro Detroit begin.

And, as you might know, there’s also a critter to represent the new year, thanks to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon!

Want to learn more about the Lunar New Year? Introduce your kids to some cultural fun with Chinese New Year celebrations in metro Detroit.

CELEBRATE: Lunar New Year 2024!

Feb. 10 and 24, 2024

See a live introduction to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, Chinese star mythology and more at the Planetarium & Dome Theatre. There will be a zodiac poster giveaway while supplies last.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Feb. 10, 2024

See Xiao Dong Wei perform at Hawk Black Box Theatre. The day’s events will also include a family-friendly Lunar New Year celebration.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon!

Feb. 17, 2024

Families can celebrate the Year of the Dragon with Tai Chi and dance demonstrations, lantern painting, calligraphy, a tea ceremony and games.

Celebrate Chinese New Year

Feb. 18, 2024

  • Address: Mon Jin Lau Restaurant, 1515 E. Maple Road, Troy
  • Cost: $69/ages 11 and up, $35/ages 3-10, free/ages 2 and under

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon at Mon Jin Lau Restaurant with a spectacular event for all ages! Tickets must be purchased in advance. Dinner reservations can be made from 6-6:45 p.m. and the Traditional Lion Dance will start promptly at 7:15 p.m. There will also be tarot card readers, magicians and firecrackers.

Feb. 23-25, 2024

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with a dragon parade, dragon dance, lion dance, Taiwan Cultural Display and more.
