Former Metro Parent CoverKids Are Getting Married

Josh Rousseau and Sarah Kiefer have a lot in common – they like hiking, cooking, CrossFit, traveling and they were both Metro Parent CoverKids when they were younger.

Family members of the happy couple reached out to us to let us know of this delightful twist of fate and we just couldn’t help but want to tell the whole world.

Shared lime light

When Sarah’s parents, Sharon and Tom Kiefer, went over Josh parents, Vivianne and David Rousseau’s house in Farmington Hills for the first time, Josh’s framed Metro Parent cover caught their eye.

There were two of a younger Josh on the magazine cover. On the left, a photo of him smiling and holding a book in a collared shirt and vest. On the right, a photo of him looking serious in a black leather jacket and black sunglasses.

Why did an early 2000s magazine cover catch their attention? Sarah, who grew up in Dearborn, was also featured on the cover around the same time, when she was two years old. Sarah was sitting in the cover photo wearing green overalls holding a sunflower in her hands.

Sarah’s parents noticed Josh’s Metro Parent cover on the wall and said, “Oh, Sarah was on that, too!”

CoverKid experience

Both sets of parents remember the CoverKid contest being in Metro Parent and Josh’s mom, Vivianne remembers the day of the casting call vividly since he was a bit older.

“It was at Oakland Mall and Josh got hungry waiting in line so I bought him a hot dog or a pretzel and he had mustard with it,” she said. “He got mustard all over his white polo shirt and I remember trying to wipe it off before he was seen.”

Afterwards, Josh got a t-shirt and sunglasses from the casting and they didn’t think much about it. A couple of months later, he was chosen for the cover. “I forgot all about it and then a couple months later, we got a letter in the mail,” says Vivianne.

The day of the cover shoot, Josh came in with the “preppy” look. For the other side, he was given the photographer’s leather jacket and sunglasses to wear for the shoot and the rest is history.

The proposal

Fast forward, the University of Michigan Dearborn graduates have been dating for a few years and currently live in Arizona. Josh called Sarah’s parents in the fall explaining his intention to propose to Sarah on a hike. That’s when the plan started to plan a surprise engagement party in Arizona after the proposal.

On Jan. 29, Josh and Sarah took a hike at Devil’s Bridge Trail in Sedona, Arizona. While on the hike, his cousins offered to take pictures of the couple on the bridge. This was where Josh proposed and Sarah responded, “Yes, I will marry you.”

After the proposal, a nature photographer, Reese Baird, approached the newly engaged couple. He revealed he was taking aerial drone shots in the area and had happen to capture the proposal from the air. They now had the coolest engagement video, another star-worthy moment to add to their collection of memories.

To celebrate their engagement, we made a mock cover!
