One great way to help our communities thrive is by supporting Black-owned businesses. There are plenty of amazing restaurants, shops and services to choose from around town. 

Start with this list to find a business near you. Then, learn about other ways to appreciate and support other cultures with your kids.

Family-Friendly Black-Owned Businesses

Detroit Book City  

This independent bookstore offers books for the entire family. It specializes in Black media including urban-fiction, biographies, games and more. It also hosts many holiday events and book expos. If you would like to shop online, they can ship your purchase to your home in 2-3 days.

Good Cakes & Bakes

Try some of their most popular items such as Southern Caramel Cake, Red Velvet Cake, Strawberry Crunch Cake and Sweet Potato Pound Cake. The shop also offers vegan cake and ice cream options. If you bring the kids by their Columbia Street location, they have a kid’s corner with toys for them to play with while you’re enjoying your treats.

This indie bookshop offers a wide variety of books and other items meant to enhance your lifestyle, including oils, incense, world maps, raw snacks and more. The shop also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. You can purchase books or items online as well and have them shipped to your home.

The Coloring Museum

The Coloring Museum is an interactive art experience that allows visitors of all ages to color on the walls. Guests can learn about the local minority artists that created the drawings they color. They will be at this location until Feb. 25, 2024. They will be at local events until they move into their bigger venue.

Whatcha Wanna Eat? Food Hall

Whatcha Wanna Eat? Food Hall is Detroit’s first Black-owned food hall. It is home to nine vendors with menus comprised of chicken sandwiches, barbecue, rice bowls, baked goods sweets and more. Kids will love being able to pick out whatever they’re in the mood for.

This restaurant celebrates East African food and culture with their signature dish, Nyumbani, a slow-simmered beef dish with coconut rice, fried plantains and peanut-stewed spinach.

Black Stone Bookstore & Cultural Center

This Black-owned bookstore offers shipping or in-store pickup for customers. Shop Black calendars, Black Stone gear and tons of books, including an abundance of kid’s books. The venue also hosts events.

BT’s Bakery Shop

Find cupcakes, pound cakes, cookies, tortes and more sweet treats. 

Burn Rubber

Shop here for sneakers and clothing, including grade school size shoes. There’s even a walk-up window for easy ordering.

COOP Caribbean Fusion

Located inside the Detroit Shipping Company, this Caribbean restaurant and food hall in Detroit serves chicken wings, sandwiches, salads, Jamaican food, Caribbean food and more.

Cornbread Restaurant & Bar

Country fried pork chops, Louisiana style gumbo, catfish and burritos are on the menu at this spot — along with beans and cornbread, of course. 

Cream Blends

This company offers customers body butters, scrubs, oils, soaps and candles – all made from natural ingredients. A subscription program is also offered for anyone who wants to receive their products on a more regular basis.

DCreated Boutique

This mobile baby boutique handcrafts and curates children’s clothing along with other miscellaneous gifts. Owner Brianna Williams started off making organic clothing for her newborn and now makes clothing for littles ones that are one-of-a-kind pieces.

Delphine Jamaican Restaurant 

Take a taste of authentic Jamaican eats including jerk chicken, beef patties and more. 

Detroit Soul 

Find classic soul food including pork chops, BBQ chicken, perch, tilapia and more. They offer scrumptious peach cobblers and pound cakes, too. 

Detroit Vegan Soul
