The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has dedicated itself to exploring, celebrating and preserving African American culture for more than 50 years.
The museum’s newest exhibit, “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” features the Oscar-winning costumes of designer Ruth E. Carter. Carter is the first Black person to win an Oscar in the costume design category, and is also the first Black woman to win two Oscars. Her work in “Black Panther” helped Marvel Studios earn its first Oscar in 2019.
More than just costumes, Carter’s Afrofuturistic work honors ancient cultures and creates a deep representation in the film industry. Her attention to detail pulls stories of race, politics and culture into her work, which is then brought to life by the actors and actresses who wear her costumes on screen.
The exhibition features more than 60 of Carter’s original designs, including costumes from “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Malcolm X,” “Do The Right Thing” and more iconic films.
Visitors at the Wright Museum can also view works from Detroit-based artists; learn about African American history, from the tragic Middle Passage to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond; and so much more. Here are some tips for making the most of your family’s trip to the historic museum.
