Keep Your Kids Busy With These Mid-Winter Break Activities in Metro Detroit

School’s out the week of Feb. 17 for mid-winter break. Depending on where your child goes to school, they could be on break for a couple of days or for the entire week.

With low temps outside, it’s easy to fall into the boring trap of staying indoors at home. Keeping that in mind, we have rounded up a sampling of mid-winter break activities in metro Detroit for you to check out with your kids.

Celebrate Black History & Black Futures

Black History Month Storytime at Elmwood Park Branch

Ages 0-5 can enjoy hearing a story to learn about and celebrate Black History Month. RSVP recommended.

Mid Winter Break Matinees at The New Rink

Feb. 17-21, 2025

  • Cost: $12/admission

Skate your mid-winter break away during these special discounted skating sessions. Bounce Zone included with the price of admission.

The Science of Archimedes at Cranbrook Institute of Science

Feb. 19-23, 2025

  • Address: 39221 Woodward Ave., Bloomfield Hills
  • Cost: $7-$8/adults, $5-$6/seniors 62+ and kids 2-12, free for kids under 2. This cost is in addition to the general admission price.

Explore the life, history and science of Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 B.C.E.). This traveling exhibit features more than 60 hands-on inventions and exhibits.

Celebrating Black Voices Firm Series – Black Panther at Romulus Public Library

Feb. 20, 2025

In honor of Black History Month, enjoy a screening of Black Panther (PG13). The movie begins at 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be available while supplies last.

Bowers Farm Winter Park 2025

  • Cost: Free/admission, $17/glow tubing ticket

Families can enjoy the last weekend of Winter Park, which features glow tubing, a winter playscape, animal experiences, bonfires and more.

Black History Month Family Storytime and Movie at Edison Branch

Detroit Book City African-American Family Book Expo & Read-In 2025

  • Cost: Free/admission, fees for items on sale

This ninth annual expo features book discussions, kids activities, meet-and-greets with Black authors and more. The first 100 adults receive a swag bag.
