Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is Michigan’s largest public education system. With more than 100 schools, the school district serves a diverse student body ranging in educational settings from early education through high school.

2. DPSCD overcame learning loss faster than most Michigan school districts

According to the Educational Recovery Scorecard from Stanford and Harvard Universities, Detroit Public Schools have shown significant academic growth in the post-pandemic educational recovery, surpassing both state and national averages in key academic areas. 

DPSCD students have improved more in reading and math compared to other districts, especially among students who face economic challenges. The district’s success is due to effective use of federal COVID-19 relief funds and focused efforts to improve schools.

3. DPSCD provides Montessori school programs for kids up to eighth grade

While DPSCD offers several unique academic programs, one standout is their public Montessori program. Their Montessori classes offer a bright, cozy and welcoming environment for kids from pre-K to eighth grade. 

This approach emphasizes a child-centered learning environment where students are encouraged to pursue their interests through movement, collaboration and concentration. 

The Montessori program is located at three DPSCD schools: Edison Elementary School (preK-grade three), Edmonson Elementary: A Wall to Wall Montessori Community (preK-grade eight) and Palmer Park Preparatory Academy (preK-grade eight). Parents can apply online. 

4.  DPSCD offers free, interactive virtual series for families to learn math together 

Eureka Math for Families helps parents and guardians learn math with their children in a 18-sesion virtual series. 

The free series is led by DPSCD Master Teachers to strengthen parents’ ability to support their child’s math education and continue to have discussions about home at home. The sessions are held on Microsoft Teams. 

5. DPSCD students can apply to five Examination High Schools

The district offers an unique opportunity for students through their selective admission high school programs. 

These five schools are Cass Technical High School, Renaissance High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, Southeastern High School and The School at Marygrove. 

All schools require students to pass an entrance examination for admission. The Exam High School programs are designed to help students for college and career preparation.
