What Parents Need to Know about University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

One of the highest ranked universities in the nation is right in metro Detroit’s backyard.

The University of Michigan (U-M) serves 34,454 undergraduate and 18,401 graduate students from its home in Ann Arbor. The school is also located in an enviable spot — Ann Arbor consistently ranks as a great place to live.

The university has two satellite campuses located in metro Detroit. Its Dearborn and Flint campuses have 6,187 and 5,011 undergraduate students respectively.

Students come from all over the world for a Michigan education.

U-M ranks third in public universities in the nation from the U.S. News & World Report and first in the state of Michigan.

Quick Info

  • The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 and is considered a “Public Ivy,” a play on “Ivy League” used to describe more accessible universities with stellar academics.
  • The school is ranked second in research volume among U.S. public research universities and is classified as a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University with very high research activity.
  • Many star athletes find a home at U-M. The school is part of the Big Ten conference and has 27 NCAA Division I teams, too.
  • The school is also well regarded for its medicine program: It operates both the highest rated hospital and children’s hospital in the state.

Academic Programs

The University of Michigan offers more than 280 degree programs across 14 undergraduate schools and colleges.

Plus, students learn in classrooms with a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

The top undergraduate majors by total enrollment are computer and information sciences, business, economics, behavioral neuroscience and experimental psychology, according to the World News & Report

Visit the school’s academic programs list for a full list of available study options.

Campus Life

The vast majority – 97% – of first-year students live on campus. Living in close proximity can make a huge difference when it comes to finding community.

It’s no secret that U-M’s championship athletics contribute to campus life in a big way. More than 100,000 fans pile into the Big House for football games and tailgating is practically a sport in itself.

U-M knows that getting involved on campus can make students feel more at home.

The university offers 1,700 student organizations, ranging in topics from sports, cultural diversity, business and more. Fraternity and sororities are also popular on campus — 5,913 students take part in its 55 chapters.

Admissions and Scholarships

At the University of Michigan, students don’t apply to the university — they apply to the individual school or college they are interested in joining. Each college has its own requirements for admission.

There are 10 schools which admit first-year applicants:

Students can apply using the Common App. The university requires a $75 application fee, though some students might be eligible for a fee waiver.

Test scores are optional, but applicants must submit high school transcripts, a teacher evaluation and essays. Some majors, like dance, theater and music, require additional application materials or auditions.

There are multiple scholarships awarded based on academic achievement, personal talents, interests, leadership qualities, financial need or a combination of these. Applicants are automatically considered for many scholarships when they apply.

A list of scholarships that require a separate application can be found on the university’s scholarship page

Cost

Tuition is calculated based on a number of factors, including which program students study and their class standing.

For example, an in-state first-year student studying in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts should expect to pay $18,346 for annual tuition.

Students can use the university’s net price calculator to get a better understanding of total costs.
