Three Michigan Towns Ranked As Most Affordable Place to Live in U.S.

A new ranking of affordable U.S. cities puts a national spotlight on three Michigan towns.

U.S. News and World Reports lists three Michigan cities on its ranking of the 25 most affordable cities across the country: Battle Creek, Midland and Bay City.

The outlet compared the median annual household income with the housing cost in each city as well as a regional cost of living index to determine affordability.

Its findings show that Michigan has serious value to offer residents.

Why Michigan cities stand out

Battle Creek

Coming in at No. 25 on the list is Battle Creek, Michigan.

The town earned the nickname “Cereal City” thanks to its history as the location of the launch of the Kellogg brothers’ breakfast food. Families looking to take in some local manufacturing history can visit in June for the annual cereal festival

And while the town is home to around 50,000 people, firmly putting it in the small-sized city category, Detroit is less than a two hour drive away.

U.S. News and World Report says Battle Creek stands out for its low cost of living.

Renting in the city sits at a median price of $703, compared to the national median rent of $1,127. Plus, the city’s median home value is $138,764, nearly a third of the national average home value of $370,489, reports the news outlet.

Midland

Midland’s historic architecture and extensive outdoor space make it stand out. The city is known as a hub for midcentury modern design and is home to the nation’s longest canopy walk, located in the Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens.

The city is home to about 40,000 residents and has a median household income of $75,889.

Of the 25 cheapest places to live on the list, Midland is ranked highest in the individual category of “most desirable places to live.”

Bay City

The most affordable place to live in Michigan in the U.S. News and Report’s ranking is Bay City.

Located along the Saginaw River, Bay City is a great place for families who enjoy life on the water. The town’s 33,000 residents have easy access for boating, fishing, swimming and more.

The U.S. News and World Report says Bay City is particularly affordable when it comes to rent and housing costs.

Bay City’s median rent is $636 and its median home value is $90,930, but the median household income is also much lower–roughly $32,000 less than the national median, reports the outlet.
