What advice do you have for finding the right summer camp for your kid?
Christina: When searching for the perfect camp for my child, who initially struggled with communication, I took a systematic approach. I asked other parents about camps they recommended, scheduled trial days, and paid for single days during winter, mid-year, and Christmas breaks. This allowed me to evaluate the camps, staff, processes, and my child’s comfort level.
Which local summer camps have you enjoyed the most and what made them stand out?
Christina: By sending my child to different camps during non-summer breaks, we were able to identify three ideal camps that worked best for us. Our top 3 camps are: YMCA (Boll location), Troy Gym and ArtLab J. One thing I love about all three camps is that they start enrollment early, allowing parents to pay for summer camp in installments rather than one lump sum. While camp is expensive, this payment structure helps tremendously. The YMCA is the most affordable option.
Any other summer camp advice you’d like to share?
Christina: I love all three camps primarily because they supported my child’s social development. Over three years, she has blossomed. At the YMCA, she discovered a love for swimming and their STEM classes. Troy Gym sparked her interest in gymnastics, which led to us investing in rock climbing classes during fall and winter. Art Lab J, though the most expensive, has had the biggest impact. From dance classes to art programs, the educational approach is exceptional. She particularly thrives there due to the smaller size and the personal relationships she’s built.
