Family Road Trip Guide: Glenmont, Ohio

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort, located in Glenmont, Ohio, provides a cozy escape for families all year long, but I doubt there is a more magical time to visit than the winter. Nestled in the lush forests of Ohio’s countryside, this resort offers a chance to reconnect with each other and with nature while experiencing the comfort and charm of modern treehouse living.

Getting To Glenmont, Ohio

Traveling from metro Detroit to Glenmont, Ohio, is a straightforward journey primarily via I-75 South, I-80/I-90 East and US-250 South. It’s about a four-hour drive. Just be ready to pay the tolls.

A quick detour can take families to Toledo for a visit to The Imagination Station or Sandusky for Cedar Point

What Families Will Love About The Mohicans

The concept of treehouse resorts, blending the charm of childhood treehouses with the amenities of modern hospitality, began to gain popularity in the early 2000s. This trend was driven by a growing desire for unique travel experiences and a deeper connection with nature.

As people sought escapes from their fast-paced modern lifestyle, treehouse resorts emerged as an innovative solution, offering a blend of adventure, tranquility and eco-consciousness. The Mohicans Treehouse Resort has consistently ranked in the top 30 worldwide.

Built with sustainability in mind, the structures are crafted from reclaimed materials and designed to minimize their impact on the environment. Each treehouse at the Mohicans is a masterpiece of design, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

The treehouse we stayed in swayed gently in the wind due to its height, and the flexibility of the trees supporting it. Trees are naturally flexible and naturally bend under the force of the wind to avoid damage. Don’t worry, proper engineering ensures that this movement doesn’t compromise the treehouse’s integrity or safety. As someone who tends to get seasick, the very gentle swaying motion had no ill effect. My husband didn’t even notice it.

During our stay, I spent an unmatched quiet afternoon, steaming mug in hand, wrapped in a blanket by the window reading while my boys tended the fire. (Firewood was provided.) The kitchen is stocked with coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Large windows and spacious decks in each treehouse provide breathtaking views of the forest canopy and the stars above.

What sets The Mohicans apart is not just its picturesque location or the novelty of its accommodations, but also the attention to detail in each aspect of the guest experience. From cozy, well-appointed interiors that feature modern amenities (including heat, exquisite mini-kitchens and elegant bathrooms) to the tranquil ambiance that permeates the resort, every element is carefully curated to ensure a memorable stay.

Beyond the treehouses themselves, the resort offers a variety of activities to engage with the natural beauty of the area. Guests can enjoy hiking through the forest, bird watching, and exploring the nearby rivers and streams.

For those seeking an adventure outside of the resort, there are many opportunities for unique shopping, cozy wineries, yoga and meditation amidst the tranquility of the woods.

Places to eat near The Mohicans

We spent a few hours at the Mohican Country Market, open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday in the fall and winter. This little Amish market had everything we needed to stock our treehouse for the weekend. We bought milk, butter, bread, and a few delicious bakery items. It also has a hopping cafe that serves sandwiches, wraps and salads as well as fried chicken where we decided to stay for lunch.

For those who might want to venture out beyond the resort, check out The Black Fork Bistro in nearby Loudonville for American steak, burgers and pizza or pasta. Or dive into a full-on pizza night at family-owned Trail’s End Pizza Co., also in Loudonville, which also has enough basket options on the menu and a great kids menu to please everyone in the family.

If you can’t get enough of nature, love a cozy fireplace and enjoy a great family-style meal, check out Bromfield’s Restaurant in Mohican State Park Lodge in nearby Perrysville. By the way, it was named after Pulitzer Prize winning author and naturalist Louis Bromfield.

How to Prepare for Your Trip

I’m sorry (but not too much) to say that the market was our only time spent away from the treehouse. The treehouse was just so cozy, and in the middle of a busy school and sports schedule, it provided the perfect landing spot for snuggling, naps and quiet conversations.

To make your stay wonderful, here are some items that I recommend bringing:

  • Charcoal for the grill
  • Extra blankets (maybe an electric one, if you are like me and can’t get enough warmth)
  • Books and magazines
  • Coloring book and gel pens or colored pencils
  • Board games, cards or puzzles
  • DVDs (there is no cable or internet)
  • Your coziest robe, jammies and slippers

Beyond offering a quiet treehouse retreat, The Mohicans Treehouse Resort also serves as a venue for events, notably weddings. Its blend of rustic charm and elegance makes it a sought-after destination for couples.

There were so many little magical moments that made this stay special — from the black and white farm cat that paid us a visit, to the giant wooden swing under the treehouse, to the twinkly warm white lights wrapped around the drawbridge leading to our door from the steps. I cannot recommend this place enough!

In essence, The Mohicans Treehouse Resort is more than just a place to stay; it’s a destination that offers a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of nature while experiencing a unique experience — to sleep in a treehouse that rivals the one from Swiss Family Robinson. It’s a retreat that appeals to those seeking adventure, romance or simply a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
