Sandusky, Ohio
- Approximately two-hour drive
Best known as America’s Rockin’ Roller Coast and the home to Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, is a blast for families with kids of all ages. This destination is perfect for families who love to be on the go, even when on vacation.

Not a roller coaster family? No problem. Sandusky offers indoor and outdoor water parks, family-friendly resorts, golf courses, delicious dining options and much more.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Approximately 2.5-hour drive
Depending on when your child’s school breaks during the spring, you might not know what weather to expect when traveling in the Midwest. No matter the temperature, Grand Rapids has so many fun activities for families to enjoy.
Visit the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park to see spring flowers blooming. Kids can enjoy an interactive children’s garden and older tweens will love splashing the boats in the Great Lakes Garden. Parents will find a sense of relaxation in the serene Japanese Garden.
Grand Rapids is also home to a children’s museum and the oldest museum in Michigan, the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
Parents who love craft brews will have another reason to love this city. Grand Rapids is home to more than 40 craft breweries, all within a 30-minute drive of each other.
Kalamazoo, Michigan
- Approximately 2.5-hour drive
Kalamazoo has something for every family: scenic nature, kid-approved museums and activities and great dining options, as well as some fun nightlife and breweries for parents!
Kids can let loose on Climb Kalamazoo’s more than 10,000 square feet of climbing space. Airway Fun Center is another great place to get out some energy, from go-karts to mini golf, a ropes course and more.
The Air Zoo takes learning about aviation to interesting heights as it features flight simulators and a hot air balloon-themed Ferris wheel. For outdoors-y families, Kalamazoo Nature Center has been recognized as one of the nation’s best nature centers.
On the way to Kalamazoo, stop in Colon, Michigan, the Magic Capital of the World, where magicians are immortalized in stars on the sidewalk and you can find thousands of handmade magic props. Light up the eyes of little magicians and see if they can devise clever tricks of their own.
New Buffalo, Michigan
- Approximately 3.5-hour drive
If you’re looking for a beach town escape without boarding a plane, New Buffalo is the place to go.
Just over three hours from Detroit, this charming town has scenic Lake Michigan views and a cute downtown area with shops, restaurants and, of course, old-school ice cream parlors.
Water activities include kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing and jet skiing. Families interested in boating can rent a variety of boats and try tubing or water skiing. There are even guided yacht cruises that will take your family up and down the coast.
While visiting, be sure to make a quick stop at the tiny New Buffalo Railroad Museum, or take a winery tour at one of the many local wineries in southwest Michigan.
Chicago, Illinois
- Approximately five-hour drive
