Family Neighborhood Guide to Hamtramck

Hamtramck may be best known for its rich Polish history and diverse community, but did you know it was named for French-Canadian soldier Jean François Hamtramck? Located in Wayne County, Hamtramck is surrounded by the city of Detroit, except for one part that borders on Highland Park. A variety of popular festivals throughout the year attract visitors from all over the area, and it is a destination for many to get paczkis on Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

Here are some places to check out there the next time you visit!

Getting There: Hamtramck is accessible via I-75 or I-94 depending on which side of town and direction you are coming from, Hamtramck is about 5 miles from the center of Detroit.

Srodek’s Campau Quality Sausage Co.

A second generation, family-owned and operated Polish and European-style market with authentic, quality products, this mainstay has been serving the community since 1981. Pick up everything you need for lunch or dinner, including store-made pierogi and soup.

The Fowling Warehouse

A pastime that has gained popularity in recent years, fowling is a cross between football, bowling and horseshoes. Reservations can be made, but Sundays are available for open play for all ages 10+.

Keyworth Stadium

Address: 3201 Roosevelt St., Hamtramck

Home of the Detroit City Football Club, make it a family outing and take in a match. Concessions feature a rotation of food trucks from local area restaurants.

Ukrainian American Archives & Museum

Address: 9630 Joseph Campau St., Hamtramck

A research and educational center on the Ukrainian immigration to Michigan and their contributions to the United States, it features a collection of folk art and fine art. Guided tours for groups can be scheduled.

Hamtramck Historical Museum

Address: 9525 Joseph Campau St., Hamtramck 

A non-profit, owned and operated by the Friends of Historical Hamtramck, the museum is located next to the Polish Art Center and chronicles Hamtramck’s history. Open Saturdays and Sundays, as well as by appointment.

Hamtramck Disneyland

Address: 12087 Klinger, Hamtramck 

Created by Dmytro Szylak over 30 years, the 1,945-square-foot folk art installation known as “Hamtramck Disneyland” can be viewed from the alleyway between Sobieski and Klinger north of Commor and south of Carpenter. Mr. Szylak died in 2015, but today the installation is owned and maintained by Hatch Art. There is an ongoing effort to restore and preserve the original intention of the artist.
