Tax time is here, and if your family is expected to receive a refund, you’re probably already thinking about what to do with the extra money.
That’s where Macomb Community Action comes in.
The organization is teaming up with Michigan State University Extension and Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) to give the community access to free financial advice and resources during its Show Me the Money Day event.
“Show Me the Money Day is an opportunity for people to participate in free financial resources, see about affordable financial products and services and participate in financial education classes,” says Mary Frontiero, the program manager at Macomb Community Action.
The event, which takes place at the Robert A. VerKuilen Building in Clinton Township from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on March 25, coincides with one of Macomb Community Action’s walk-in tax Saturdays. As people are getting their taxes prepared for free, they can attend workshops and visit vendor tables.
Attendees can expect practical money-saving tips during Show Me the Money Day.
“We offer highly requested and well attended classes, put on by our partner agencies,” she says.
These agencies include Lakeshore Legal Aid, which provides a landlord and tenant information class. The Social Security Administration, another partner, comes in to talk about accessing social security benefits.
MSU Extension provides a class for eating on a budget (much needed with rising grocery costs!) and a DIY class to make your own laundry detergent. Classes on budgeting and credit scores are also offered, in addition to an energy conservation workshop. Each person who attends that workshop will receive LED lightbulbs as a thank-you gift, she adds.
“We have done this for five years now and it’s just been a wonderful way to connect with the community and get financial resources to them,” Frontiero says of the event, which is being held in person for the first time since the COVID pandemic began.
Once participants are out of their classes, they can stop by to see vendors, including Lakeshore Legal Aid, MSU Extension, Macomb Community Action, Social Security Administration and some local banks.
“It’s such a wonderful free opportunity to put more tips in your toolbox for budgeting and for your finances,” she says. “At this point in time when some of the relief dollars are going away, it’s important to start figuring out what your plan is going to be going forward, so Show Me the Money Day is a perfect opportunity to come and learn more about getting on firm financial footing.”
