Fun Things to Do with Dogs in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor

Who says parents of human children get to have all of the fun? Pet parents and families with four-legged members deserve some time together while out and about, too.

Lucky for them, there’s no shortage of fun things to do with dogs in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.

Here, we’ve listed 10 of our favorite dog-friendly activities, including a pet-friendly bakery, local parks that allow Fido to be off-leash, agility courses and much more! So, take a peek to find something your kids and pets will love and make sure your next outing is something that the entire family will love.

Dive off the dock

Is your dog a water bug? Then they’ll go wild for dock-diving. Introduce adventurous canines to this activity through private dock diving classes at Bark-A-Bout in Shelby Township

Explore a hiking trail

A long hike is a dream for many doggos — especially the curious ones that love to sniff and “mark their territory.” Choose from more urban trails such as the Dequindre Cut Greenway in Detroit (leashes required) or more scenic escapes in Dexter’s Paw Run Recreation Area or Maybury State Park in Northville.

Hit the beach

Don’t keep Spot cooped up in the house this summer. Instead, bring him along on your next trip to the beach. Local dog-friendly beaches include Ruedisale Point Park in New Baltimore and Belle Isle Beach in Detroit.

Go on vacation

No really, there’s no reason to leave your dog at home the next time you take some time away. Bring your puppers up to Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls State Park or Frankenmuth.

Need some place to stay? Check out BringFido’s list of pet-friendly hotels and if you’re not into traveling, consider pampering your pooch at Paw Print Inn Pet Resort and Spa.

Order off the secret menu

Need a pick-me-up while out with your dog? Swing by your local Starbucks for a secret menu Puppuccino, which is just a small cup filled with whipped cream. Not into coffee? Score a pooch-ini at Shake Shack or order plain Timbits at Tim Hortons (just be sure to ask for the pet-friendly option!).

Shop ’til you drop

Not all stores allow pets inside, but there are stores beyond your local pet store that would love to have Spot as a guest. The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township is always a great option (though some shops don’t actually allow pets inside). You can also bring your pup into Moosejaw Clothing Store in Detroit or The Vintage Market in Wyandotte. Need a meal while you’re shopping? Hit up the patio at HopCat.

Check out BringFido’s list of Michigan stores that allow pets for more.

Snag a dog-friendly treat

Has your dog been a good boy lately? Treat them to a tasty snack made just for them. Three Dog Bakery in Plymouth and Clinton Township makes dog-safe ice cream and cookies while Maestros Dog Haus offers jerky, grain-free burgers and bones.

Take on a local agility course

Keeping our dogs active is an important piece of pet-parenthood — and agility courses can keep dogs both physically and mentally engaged. According to the American Kennel Club, beginners can start out with tunnels or weave poles in their backyard. If you’re more serious about it, you can take courses with the Sportsmen’s Dog Training Club of Detroit in Warren.

Try Paddle boarding

Is your pop calm, cool and collected? Paddle boarding could be an activity to try together. Both you and your dog will need a life jacket and you’ll need to introduce your dog to the board before hitting the waves. Get tips on how to get started here and check out our list of water trails in southeast Michigan once you’re ready to try.

Visit the Dog Park

Dog parks are a no-brainer and a great option for dogs that need a little physical activity — and there are plenty of dog parks in southeast Michigan for your pup to enjoy. You’ll even find agility equipment and toys at select locations! Some parks separate small dogs from large dogs and others require a membership, so check with the ones near you for details.
