Planet Earth gives us food, water, shelter and all of the things necessary to keep us going.

Every year on Earth Day, April 22, we get to celebrate our beautiful blue orb by showing how much we care by cleaning her up and enjoying other Earth Day events.

Looking for ways to get your kids tuned into learning about our environment and appreciating nature in 2023?

From volunteer clean-ups to craft days and festivals, metro Detroit and Ann Arbor are chock-full of fun Earth Day activities for all ages to enjoy. Gear up, go green and head outside to give back to Mother Earth.

Macomb

Earth Day Celebration at Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center

April 22, 2023

Meet live animal ambassadors and learn how you can be kind to wildlife. There will also be eco-friendly crafts, scheduled guided hikes and educational stations. Registration preferred.

Earth Day Cleanup at Lake St. Clair Metropark

April 22, 2023

Meet at the Nature Center at Lake St. Clair Metropark to pick up your tools, safety equipment and area assignments. Help clean the park up in celebration of Earth Day. Snacks and water will be provided. Pre-registration required by 4 p.m. April 21.

Earth Day Cleanup at Stony Creek Metropark

April 22, 2023

Celebrate Earth Day with this park clean-up. Check in at the Park Office at Stony Creek Metropark to pick up your trash bags, gloves and directions/map to your assigned cleanup area. Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. April 15.

Earth Day Community Litter Clean-Up

April 22, 2023

Meet in the parking lot behind Mcdonald’s to get an overview of the pickup areas. Garbage bags, litter pickers and refreshments provided.

Earth Day Celebration at the Recreation Activities Center

April 20, 2023

Explore the Outdoor Natural Play Area and celebrate Mother Earth with a recycled craft, live animal interactions and guided hikes. Can register with or without the hike. Pre-registration required.

Earth Day Camp at Indian Springs Metropark

April 22, 2023

Ages 7 and up can enjoy crafts and projects to celebrate Earth Day at this camp. Bring your own lunch and wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy. Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. April 19. 

Celebrate Earth Day – “86 Plastic” at Stage Nature Center

April 22, 2023

Ages 8-plus can join 86 Plastic to hear about ways to replace plastic in the household. Registration required.

Huron Corridor Earth Day Clean Up at Indian Village Park

April 22, 2023

The all-ages event will take place at Indian Village Park. Participants will help by picking up trash, making basic improvements and more. Doughnuts, water and snacks will be provided. Make sure to bring gloves, flat head shovels and rakes.

The Oakland County Earth Day March, Rally and Fair at Centennial Commons Park

April 22, 2023

Oakland County communities will take administrative action to fight against the climate crisis while creating justice, protecting future generations and creating sustainable jobs. The Earth Fair will feature live music, art, a march and speeches from political leaders.

Washtenaw

Electronics Recycling at Ypsilanti District Library – Whittaker

April 22, 2023

Celebrate Earth Day by recycling your unwanted computers, printers and other household electronics. Check website for the list of acceptable and non-acceptable items. When you arrive, stay in your vehicle with the items in your trunk. Limited to residents and businesses of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Superior Township.

Mothering Earth: A Poetry Gathering at Ypsilanti District Library – Michigan Avenue

Teens can join local poets Desirae Simmons and Leslie McGraw at the library as they do a poetry reading revolving around Earth Day.

Dequindre Cut Spring Cleanup

April 22, 2023

This cleanup event will focus on removing litter from the Dequindre Cut Greenway and surrounding streets. Volunteer for a few focused hours or casually collect litter as you walk. Trash bags, gloves and a limited number of trash pickers and rakes will be provided. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Earth Day at Greenmead Historical Park

Families can head to the Alexander Blue House for a hands-on encounter with Dan the Creature Man. Kids will also create their very own take-home plant terrarium. Advance registration required.

Earth Day: Heroes of Conservation at Lake Erie Metropark

April 22, 2023

Ages 8 and up can join Lake Erie Metropark for a look at real-life heroes and fictional heroes from the Marvel Universe. Pre-registration required by April 21 at 4 p.m.

Earth Day: History Hike at Lake Erie Metropark

April 22, 2023

Join Lake Erie Metropark for a nature hike to celebrate Earth Day. Discover the history of the holiday and how you can help the environment. Pre-registration required by April 21 at 4 p.m.

Earth Day Shoreline Cleanup at Lake Erie Metropark

April 22, 2023

Volunteers for this event will help clean-up along the picnic areas and shoreline of the park. All ages welcome (children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult). Supplies will be provided. Pre-registration required by April 19 at 4 p.m.
