LTU Summer Camps Prep High Schoolers for the Future

Wouldn’t it be nice if your high school student could identify what type of university experience would fit them best before they are hard-pressed to decide as a high school senior?

At Lawrence Technological University, a private university in metro Detroit, your student has that exact opportunity, in a chaperoned, secure and structured setting.

“I call our camp programs a mini college experience,” says Lisa Kujawa, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “They’re perfect for the motivated student who loves innovation and creativity and wants to learn while having fun.”

LTU camps offer not only a variety of STEAM topics but also the chance to learn in the university’s classrooms, labs and studios, plus residential campers live in secure student housing, for the total student experience. Kujawa says that many students from Michigan and beyond attend each year.

Hands-on learning, innovative STEAM topics

Courses are taught by talented full-time university instructors, along with help from current LTU students. Camp course selection embraces all aspects of STEAM, so you’ll find classes in everything from architecture and design to biomedical engineering and robotics.

No matter the subject matter, all classes at LTU camps are interactive, and students get the chance to combine theory with practical application.

“Hands-on experience is important to our camps,” Kujawa explains. “When students see what a subject actually entails, it helps them get a great sense of what they might want to do.” This saves time and money for students and parents later on, because the student may have refined their interests before they become a college freshman.

For example, in Game Design, students are taught to program, build, market and design video games.

“We don’t just stop at game creation; we give them the total package, including how to market the games. This is real-world experience,” says Kujawa.

Likewise, in Biotech, hands-on learning includes the study of forensic science, experimentation, DNA research and animal dissection.

Experts are often brought in to supplement the curriculum and students may take field trips to further explore their course of study. “Our classes help students explore their passions and fully understand the careers they might be thinking about,” Kujawa says.

By their very nature, STEAM topics are constantly changing and updating, and LTU camp courses evolve to reflect that, Kujawa explains. “We are preparing students for jobs that might not even exist yet.”

LTU summer camps include fun and camaraderie

Whether your student decides to attend the day camp or chooses the residential option, they’ll follow an exciting course of study, and get the chance to meet a variety of people. They’ll interact with fellow campers and current LTU students who may just end up becoming friends.

“We’ve had people meet while attending one of our camps and wind up as college roommates,” says Kujawa.

Residential campers experience a schedule that is similar to that of an actual LTU student. They stay in dorms, eat in dining halls and participate in fun activities every evening of camp.

Activities may include attending a Detroit Tigers game, bowling, movies, team building activities and campus tours.

During their stay, residential students are fully chaperoned at all times by both full-time LTU faculty and current students, and the safety and security of students are a primary concern.

Meals are included in the fees, and every student receives a laptop to use during camp. Financial aid is also available.

Day students attend from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, but they also benefit from meeting fellow students and potentially building lasting friendships. “We want students to feel at home with us,” Kujawa says.

Feedback from students and parents has been extremely positive and LTU camp attendees all have one thing in common at the end of their programs, Kujawa says. “You will leave with a lot more knowledge than you came in with.”

Camps are open for registration, so enroll now for your first choices. To learn more about Lawrence Technological University and the high school camp program, visit ltu.edu/summer-camps.
