The holiday season in metro Detroit officially kicks off when the Wayne County Lightfest flips the switch on more than 100,000 twinkling lights.
The annual drive-through tradition opens at 6 p.m. Nov. 20, at Merriman Hollow Park in Westland with music, fireworks and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, according to Wayne County Parks.
A drive filled with five miles of holiday magic
The Lightfest runs from 6 to 10 p.m. every Wednesday through Sunday through Dec. 24, with closures on Mondays and Tuesdays except near Christmas weekend, according to Wayne County Parks.
The five-mile route winds through scenic Edward N. Hines Park and features nearly 50 animated holiday-themed displays and more than 100,000 lights, offering families a cozy, festive drive from the warmth of their car.
Cars enter at 7651 N. Merriman Road in Westland, just south of Ann Arbor Trail. Organizers advise arriving early to avoid long wait times, especially on weekends.
What it costs and how to beat the wait
Admission is $5 cash per car. Larger vehicles, such as limousines, RVs, mini-buses and full-sized tour buses, are charged higher rates, up to $50 for buses carrying more than 40 passengers, according to Wayne County Parks.
Because of the Lightfest’s popularity, wait times can be long. Visitors can tune to AM 1640 for live updates on traffic flow and wait times within a few miles of the entrance.
Preview nights and fun extras for families
Before the official opening, families can enjoy two special preview nights: Bike Through the Lights takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, and the Lightfest 8K Fun Run/Walk follows at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, both starting at Merriman Hollow Park, according to Wayne County Parks.
Along the main route, visitors will find an expanded food-truck area at Perrin Park midway through the drive. The area includes restrooms, a large Santa mailbox and a walk-through “gift box” display perfect for family photos.
Tips for parents before you go
Since this is a drive-through event, families remain in their vehicles the entire time, ideal for staying warm with young children on chilly nights. Drivers are asked to stay in line, follow staff directions and avoid exiting vehicles unless instructed.
Even though everyone stays inside, bundling up is still smart. Michigan nights can be cold and damp, hot drinks, blankets and warm clothing help keep the experience comfortable while waiting in line. For fewer crowds, organizers recommend visiting on a weekday evening.
Why families keep coming back year after year
Now in its 30-plus-year run, the Lightfest is one of Metro Detroit’s longest-running holiday light displays. It offers a convenient, picturesque way to celebrate the season without spending hours outdoors in the cold.
Parents appreciate the comfort of staying in the car and the relaxed pace of the show. At just $5 per car, it’s also one of the most affordable family holiday activities in the region.
Making the most of your Lightfest visit
Families can plan their visit for less-crowded nights — Wednesdays and Thursdays tend to be calmer — and make time for food-truck stops or photos along the route. Consider pairing the Lightfest with a local dinner or a holiday shopping trip in Westland or nearby metro Detroit communities.
