As the federal shutdown continues, many Detroit families, including furloughed federal workers and those who rely on SNAP benefits, are facing growing uncertainty. Detroit Parent has gathered a list of local food programs and volunteer options for those who need support or want to help their neighbors.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, more than 1 in 6 families in Wayne County rely on food assistance. Local food banks and community organizations expect a surge in need as the shutdown continues.
Below are current food access resources and ways to get involved in Detroit and neighboring communities.
Emergency student and senior meal programs
Detroit provides meal access to ensure children and seniors are not left hungry during disruptions.
Detroit Public Schools Community District Student Meals
• Grab & Go meals on weekdays
• No ID required
Senior Congregate Dining Sites
• Low-cost meal programs at Detroit senior centers
• Home-delivered options available for seniors with limited mobility
