Children love James C. Nelson Park because it has a nice mix of greenery and play. The playground is new and clean, and has swings, slides and climbing spaces for kids of all ages. Parents can also spread out a blanket or throw a football in the adjacent open greenery. It is easy and relaxing to visit because the restrooms are clean and the parking is free.

Some fun facts

James C. Nelson Park was named after and dedicated to the first Sterling Heights firefighter killed in the line of duty in August 1990. In late 2022, the park welcomed a striking steel-and-glass “Life Tree” sculpture, added as part of the city’s Public Art Program.

There’s also a Community Garden, which offers a lush and inviting space where families and individuals can engage with nature, learn and relax. With more than 100 garden beds alongside a dedicated Children’s Garden, native-planting zones, a serviceberry and black cherry grove, a fledgling micro-forest and a butterfly conservatory, the garden is designed to foster both ecological awareness and community connection. Whether you’re guiding a curious kid through the Children’s Garden, wandering beneath the grove’s budding canopy, or quietly watching butterflies flutter by in the conservatory, this pocket of green is a beautiful complement to the park’s play zones and walking trail.

Fun in any season

The walking loop trail is about 1.2 miles long and goes through quiet areas, so it’s great for strollers, bikes or a light jog in warmer months. There are picnic tables, benches and a small pond on the way which add to the park’s peaceful, beautiful atmosphere.

In the fall, the park turns into a vibrant autumn getaway with walking path covered in orange leaves, which makes it one of the best places in the area to take a quiet fall walk. Families come to appreciate the cool climate, take some fall pictures and let their kids play. The park’s spacious lawns are great for having a cozy picnic. It’s an excellent spot for parents who love Michigan’s fall colors to relax while their kids play on the play area.

Even in winter, families can bundle up for a brisk walk or some snow play, keeping the fun going through every season. With its mix of recreation, nature and accessibility, James C. Nelson Park truly offers something for everyone, all year long.
