Kids Can Step Into Music History at the Legendary Motown Museum

Discover music history at Detroit’s iconic Motown Museum, the birthplace of the legendary Motown Sound. Located in the original Motown Studios, this must-visit attraction offers guided tours through Hitsville, USA, where stars like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5 recorded their biggest hits.

  • Berry Gordy’s Apartment: Tour the restored living quarters where Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. and his family resided during the label’s early days.
  • Studio A: Stand in the legendary recording studio where artists like Diana Ross & The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and The Temptations recorded their iconic hits.
  • Control Room: Observe the original equipment and technology used to produce the classic Motown sound.
  • Motown Atmosphere Exhibit: An immersive experience showcasing images of legendary Hitsville artists, capturing the close-knit, familial atmosphere of Detroit’s music scene.
  • Backstage Lounge: Delve into Motown’s vast music collection and access exclusive interviews with Motown veterans, uncovering the heartfelt stories behind cherished songs.

Tips when visiting the Motown Museum with kids 

  • Arrive early. Get there at least 15 minutes before your tour to check in and avoid delays.
  • No strollers allowed. Pack light and consider a baby carrier for little ones. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Tours last one hour. Keep in mind how long your child can stand before booking your visit.
  • Photos allowed, videos not. You can take pictures, but videography is prohibited inside the museum.
  • Exhibits change regularly. The museum is expanding, so there’s always something new to see.
  • Plan for parking. Street parking is available—download the Park Detroit app for easy payment.
  • Accessible for all. The museum has ramps, elevators, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms.

  • Cost: $20 for adults, $17 for kids ages 4-17. Kids under 4 are free.
