There are heaps of hills made for this fun wintertime activity in southeast Michigan — and all of the running uphill before speeding down it will keep the kids active and entertained for hours. It’s right up there with skiing and snowboarding in Michigan for sure fun.
Here, you’ll find a list of the best sledding hills in metro Detroit. Most are free but some require some fees, some offer sled rentals and others don’t.

Macomb
Chief Gene Shepherd Park
- Address: On 23 Mile Road, Shelby Township
- Cost: Free
During daylight hours and in the right weather, enjoy the sledding hills at this local park.
Civic Center Park and Historical Village
- Address: 40700 Romeo Plank Road, Clinton Township
- Cost: Free
This 73.5-acre park features a variety of fun summertime activities; plus a huge sledding hill in the winter months and a historic village to explore.
Lake St. Clair Metropark
- Address: 31300 Metropolitan Parkway, Harrison Township
- Cost: $10/vehicle permit
This sledding hill at this spot can be found in the West Playfield area and features a comfort station, warming room and picnic tables nearby. Find other wintertime activities like ice skating, ice hockey, ice fishing and cross-country skiing, too.
Stony Creek Metropark
- Address: 4300 Main Park Road, Shelby Township
- Cost: $10/vehicle permit
This spot offers cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowboarding an its West Branch and Gladeview sledding hills for tons of wintertime fun. Find hiking trails and special events throughout the year, too.
Oakland
Beverly Hills Village Park
- Address: 18801 Beverly Road, Beverly Hills
- Cost: Free
Nestled inside this 34-acre park is a sledding hill that features a steep and a not-so-steep side for sledding. But beware: a forest sits just 30-feet from the steep side of the hill. Parking is available a short walk from the hill. Watch for the annual Winter Family Fun Day that takes place in winter when the weather permits. Skiing trails also available.
Brandon Township Community Park
- Address: 1414 N. Hadley Road, Brandon Township
- Cost: Free
The sledding hill here is free to use during park hours. There is an automatic lift in operation on non-holiday Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weather permitting for free. The sledding hill can be rented with an operator for the lift for a fee.
Civic Center Park
- Address: 300 W. 13 Mile Road, Madison Heights
- Cost: Free
This park sits just behind Lamphere High School and the Civic Center and features both a large and a small sled hill for families to enjoy. Parking is available.
Heritage Park
- Address: 24915 Farmington Road, Farmington Hills
- Cost: Free
This 211-acre park offers a nature center, the historic Longacre House and a sledding hill that your kids will enjoy. Open 365 days a year.
Kensington Metropark
- Address: 4570 Huron River Parkway, Milford
- Cost: $10/vehicle permit
Pint-sized sled enthusiasts can test their skills on the bunny hill while older kids and adults fly down some of the larger hills that challenge a variety of skill levels. Also offers toboggan runs, beginner snowboarding hills and cross-country skiing routes, too.
McHattie Park
- Address: S. Lafayette St., South Lyon
- Cost: Free
A small hill that’s great for young sledders. The park has an accompanying ice skating rink.
Shiawassee Park
- Address: Shiawassee Street between Farmington and Power roads, Farmington
- Cost: Free
The sledding hill at this park offers a 300- to 400-foot run for sledders of all ages. Parking available at the top of the hill. Typically set up to make the ascent back up the hill easier. Expect crowds.
Snowy Ridge Park
- Address: 753 Welch Road #601, Commerce Charter Township
- Cost: Free
The park touts a large slope that runs pretty fast. It is on Welch Road between 14 Mile Road and Maple Road.
Waterford Oaks
- Address: 1702 Scott Lake Road, Waterford Township
- Cost: Free
Find a big ol’ sledding hill off of Rabbit Run Lane.
Washtenaw
Huron Hills Golf Course
- Address: 3465 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor
- Cost: Free
In the winter months this municipal golf course transforms into a winter wonderland of long slopes, huge hills and steep descents. Hit the sand trap just right and you can even catch some air.
Mill Pond Park
- Address: 565 W. Bennett St., Saline
- Cost: Free
One of the area’s better sledding hills is located at the northeast corner of this park. Also offer ski trails.
Rolling Hills Park
- Address: 7660 Stony Creek Road, Ypsilanti
- Costs: $6/daily resident pass, $10/daily non-resident pass, $30/annual resident pass, $45/annual non-resident pass
As its name suggests, this 363-acre Washtenaw County spot offers plenty of “rolling hills” to sled down or ski across. There’s even a lodge, complete with a fireplace, for guests to warm up at in the winter months.
Wayne
Balduck Park
- Address: 5271 Canyon St., Detroit
- Cost: Free
In addition to hiking paths, a life-sized chessboard and a dog park, this Detroit green space has a huge hill that’s perfect for sledding in the winter.
Cass Benton Park
- Address: 18951 Northville Road, Northville
- Cost: Free
This area of Hines Park is the more hilly portion of the park and has been popular with sledding enthusiasts since it was gifted to the park in the 1920s. Also offers the massive Cass Benton Hill and picnic areas, too.
Greenmead Historical Park
- Address: Greenmead Historical Village, 20501 Newburgh Road, Livonia
- Cost: Free
A small, but fun hill that’s great for first timers. It’s in the back of the parking lot of the historical park and north of the soccer fields.
Lake Erie Metropark
- Address: 32481 W. Jefferson Ave., Brownstown
- Cost: $10/vehicle permit
Winter fun at this spot includes 4.25 miles of cross-country ski trails, a massive sled hill near the wave pool complex and ice fishing out on Lake Erie, weather permitting.
Middlebelt Hill
- Address: 28497 Edward Hines Drive, Westland
- Cost: Free
Sledding down this hill is one of the top things to do in Wayne County. Offers a nearby pavilion, if you need a break, and stairs to assist kids going back up the hill.
Plymouth Township Park
- Address: 46640 W. Ann Arbor Trail, Plymouth
- Cost: Free
Grab your sled and try out the hill in Plymouth Park. A very steep and fast hill. The parking lot is at the top of the hill.
