While America still has a long way to go in creating equality for Black people, the whole world celebrates this historical moment each year on June 19, which is now known as Juneteenth, or Freedom Day.
There are many ways to teach our kids about Juneteenth and celebrate the holiday. We’ve rounded up some Juneteenth events for your family to explore this year.
Macomb
Juneteenth Festival in Downtown Mount Clemens
June 16-17, 2023
- Address: Macomb Place, Mount Clemens
- Cost: Free
This festival features an art and craft show presented by Downtown Mount Clemens and G.I.R.L. and a day of reflection and remembrance.
Juneteenth Weekend Celebration at Cairns Community Center
June 16-19, 2023
- Address: 58 Orchard St., Mount Clemens
- Cost: Free (except for Desserts with Dad which is $10/each)
Kick off the celebration on Friday at “The Meet Up” where you can enjoy a fish fry and meet local leaders and resource organizations. Saturday is “Family Game Day,” where adults and kids play indoor and outdoor games. Sunday is “Desserts with Dad,” where there will be tasty treats and photo ops. End the weekend with “Free At Last” on Monday, where there will be arts and crafts, music, hustle lessons, performers, food trucks, games and bounce houses.
Oakland
Juneteenth Celebration at the Novi Public Library

Celebrate Juneteenth at Novi Public Library with storytelling, live band, fraternity step show, sorority vocal ensemble, musical string ensemble, children’s story time and food trucks. For all ages.
Madison Heights Juneteenth Celebration at Civic Center Park

- Address: 360 W. 13 Mile Road, Madison Heights
- Cost: Free
Families are invited to celebrate Juneteenth with fun activities for kids, food trucks, educational exhibits, speakers, vendor booths and entertainment.

2023 Juneteenth, Freedom Day Celebration – University of Michigan at Michigan League
June 15-16, 2023
- Address: 911 N. University Ave., Ann Arbor
- Cost: Free
The theme of this year’s event is, “Systems Check: Exploring Structural Solutions to Systemic Racism.” This year’s celebratory events include a community prayer breakfast, a Black film festival and the Kidz Zone tent at the Top of the Park.
Juneteenth Celebration 2023 at South Huron Parking Lot
June 16-18, 2023
- Address: South Huron Parking Lot, Ypsilanti
- Cost: Free
Celebrate the community’s third Annual Juneteenth Celebration weekend with a Divine 9 Community Mixer on Friday, hustle lessons, artistry and bands on Saturday and service and music from Gospel Greats on Sunday.

Juneteenth Stories and More for All Ages at Plymouth District Library

Juneteenth Celebration at Leanna Hicks Public Library

Hear the library connect Juneteenth to the past, present and future of Freedom in the Inkster community by Walking in the Footsteps of History. There will also be games, singing, dancing, food and interactive fun.
