Any parent who has researched summer camps and activities knows it can be an expensive endeavor. That’s especially true if you need full-time care during the summer, but even a one-day or week-long camp session here and there can really add up. Fortunately, there are some free summer programs for kids available in metro Detroit for parents to consider.
If none of these activities work for you, keep in mind that some summer programs offer financial aid to help make camp more affordable for families who need assistance. Plan ahead for next year since you may need to apply well in advance.

Free summer programs for metro Detroit kids
Home Depot Kids Workshops

Home Depot locations in the area offer free workshops for kids on the first Saturday every month. Workshops are designed for children ages 5-12 and include projects like a how to a fishing game.
Detroit Institute of Arts: Drop-In Art Workshops
- Address: 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit
The DIA offers free drop-in art workshops and hands-on drawing activities for kids and families throughout the summer. All materials are provided and no registration is required. Museum admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.
