Awesome Special Needs Events for Metro Detroit Families

There are always plenty of fun activities going on around metro Detroit for kids and families to enjoy. But sometimes it’s nice for children with special needs to have an event that’s designed just for them — from sensory-friendly play times to a chance to try something new in a more patient, supportive environment.

Parents can also benefit from workshops, support meetings and other events geared toward moms and dads of children with special needs.

That’s why we’ve compiled this list featuring some great upcoming special needs events for kids and their parents. Take a peek at these activities for people with special needs and their families.

Looking for a fun event that is designed for your child’s needs? We’ve got you covered with art programming, movie nights, dances and other fun activities made for kids with sensory processing disorders and other special needs.

Adaptive 4-H Fair Day at the Oakland County Fair

July 11, 2024

  • Address: Springfield Oaks County Park, 12451 Andersonville Road, Davisburg
  • Cost: Reserve a spot by calling 248-634-8830. Free parking is available with an Oakland County Parks 2024 vehicle permit. Individuals with disabilities are eligible for a free vehicle permit.

Individuals with special needs can enjoy a Day at the Fair which features games and activities, free carnival rides, a Sea Lion Show, glass blowing demonstration, petting zoo, racing pigs, Miracle of Birth Barn and horse and livestock shows. Activities are open to all people with disabilities.

Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits: Sensory Friendly Family Concert

July 14, 2024

See Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits perform a special acoustic set of candy-coated rock music for kids, featuring a guitar, vocalists, and percussion. Pre-concert activities include lawn games and an instrument exploration station. This event is designed for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other sensory sensitivities. Registration required.

Sculpture Art with Paint a Miracle

July 29, 2024

In this adaptive sculpture class, create a colorful masterpiece using clay, wood, beads and more. Regiration required.

Chuck E. Cheese Sensory Sensitive Sunday

Aug. 4, Sept. 1, Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, 2024

  • Address: Various locations
  • Cost: Free 

On the first Sunday of every month, the play area will open two hours early for children with autism or sensory sensitivities. It will have reduced lighting and noise.

Animal Creations with Paint a Miracle

Aug. 5, 2024

In this adaptive animal creations class, create colorful animals with ink, paper and paints. Registration required.

Adaptive Kayaking Workshop at Stony Creek Metropark

Aug. 7, 2024

All abilities are welcome to learn how to kayak at Stony Creek Metropark. All equipment is provided and no experience is necessary. Registration required.

Sept. 12, 2024
